I-85 lanes to open tonight in Cabarrus County

Published 12:00 am Wednesday, April 23, 2014

Beginning tonight at 9 p.m., the N.C. Department of Transportation plans to open additional lanes on the $125.2 million I-85 widening project between George Liles Parkway (Exit 54) and N.C. 73 (Exit 55), weather permitting. This expansion will open four lanes in each direction to traffic in addition to the new lanes that opened earlier this month from Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49) to George Liles Parkway.
Crews tonight will start opening lanes on I-85 South, completing traffic control removal by 6 a.m. Thursday. Work will continue on I-85 North from 9 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday. Intermittent ramp closures at George Liles Parkway and N.C. 73 will also take place each night.
Because construction activities are ongoing at the interchanges with Poplar Tent Road and N.C. 73, the speed limit on I-85 will remain 55 miles an hour. The entire project should be completed in September.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
