Staff at Rowan County Animal Shelter are in the process of trying to address a growing problem — disease transmission among stray cats.
In an email to County Manager Gary Page, Animal Control Supervisor Clai Martin wrote shelter staff members have converted the facility’s food room to a quarantine room for incoming stray cats.
The money to purchase nine cages has been pulled from other areas, Martin wrote. “I’m purchasing eight more (cages) by pulling money out of other line items that I really didn’t need to pull money out of — but this is very important right now,” Martin wrote. “Maybe this and the concrete walls will help with disease down here and cut down on the sick and dying cats that we are having a big problem with.”
East Spencer plans candlelight vigil, balloon release
EAST SPENCER — The town of East Spencer will host a candlelight vigil and balloon release on 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Town Hall, 105 S. Long St.
This is Third Annual Candlelight Vigil and Balloon Release to recognize the effects of abuse for children and adults and for those who have lost a loved one along the way due to abuse.
Presenters will be Beth Moore of Prevent Child Abuse Rowan County and Debra Helms of Family Crisis Council.
All ages are welcome, but anyone under 16 is asked to be accomplished with an adult. For assistance, please call the Town Hall 704-636-7111.
Plant sale set May 3 in Kannapolis
KANNAPOLIS — The Kneeling Gardeners’ annual plant sale will be at Trinity United Methodist Church at 406 E. First St. on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A wide variety of plants including bulbs, annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees and vegetables will be available along with a “Garden Shop,” with decorative items related to garden interests.
Developers break ground on Copperfield Market
CONCORD — Another shopping development, Copperfield Market, has broken ground on Copperfield Boulevard, reports the Independent Tribune.
Eventually the market is supposed to include retail stores, restaurants, a bakery and a 9,000-square-foot banquet hall. The first phase includes three buildings expected to be completed in 2015.
The retail plaza could eventually be a $10 million project, officials said at a Friday groundbreaking ceremony.
The development will be on a 10-acre site between Waffle House and Komi Plaza. Developers are Kulsoom Charania and her husband, Amin, who built Komi Plaza in 2006. They also own Copperfield Commons, which they bought in 2012.
Lexington man dies in I-85 wreck
LEXINGTON — A 31-year-old man died and his mother was injured after the car they were in went out of control on Interstate 85 around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, The Dispatch of Lexington reports.
Trooper T.J. Norman told The Dispatch the driver — Linda Brank, 53, of Lexington — had minor injuries. Her son, Charles Brank, 31, died of injuries sustained in the accident.
A trooper who had a vehicle stopped on I-85 near mile maker 91 noticed that a car traveling on the highway was going too fast on a spare donut tire. When the driver tried to slow down for vehicles ahead of her, she swerved to the left and lost control of her car.
