Coming up: Signings and book sale

CHINA GROVE — On Sunday, April 13, from 2 to 4 p.m., the China Grove Roller Mill Museum will host a book signing and reception for Susan King and her son, Patrick, who co-authored the new book, “Optimism for Autism.” The book tells the story of the challenges the King family faced as Patrick struggled with autism and the triumphs they have experienced in the wake of his diagnosis. Patrick and Susan will read excerpts, meet visitors and autograph books. Refreshments will be served and the museum will be open for self-guided tours.
The Kings will also sign books at Literary Bookpost, 110 S. Main St., on Saturday, April 12, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Barbara Corriher received the Friend of the Year Award at Thursday night’s annual meeting of the Friends of Rowan Public Library.
Corriher has been a loyal member of the Friends for years and is good with both details and the big picture, said Jeff Hall, library director, in presenting the award.
Elected to the Board of Directors were Dale Basinger, Pat Beck, Dane Hartgrove, Sammie Hinshaw and Gavin Pitner. Basinger is president of the group.
Robin Sloan, author of “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore,” spoke at the meeting. The book is the focus of the 411 Community Read, involving Rowan, Cabarrus, Davidson and Stanly counties.
Do like books, audiobooks, or movies? Do you like a good bargain? If so, mark your calendar for the Rowan Public Library Annual Book Sale at RPL headquarters in Salisbury during the following dates and times: Friday, May 2, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; Saturday, May 3, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; Monday, May 5, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.
Items for sale include fiction and nonfiction hardbacks and paperbacks, children’s books, DVDs and VHS tapes, audiobooks on CD and cassette and more. Most items will be priced $2 or less.
The Great Book Caper, presented by Rowan-Salisbury Schools and Rowan Public Library, will be Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at library headquarters, 201 W. Fisher St. The Caper will celebrate the joy and mystery of reading for all ages, with local and regional authors as well as activities sponsored by schools and businesses. Participants will be able to show off their skills at reading clues, taking fingerprints and solving puzzles. There may even be a mock crime scene investigation.
In addition to activities for the kids, there will be local and regional authors selling books, signing autographs and chatting with the crowd. Festivities will take place on the front lawn of the library. Admission is free.
