Cornelius wins 5K; Carson hosts race for special needs kids

Adam Cornelius was the overall winner at the Diamond Sports 5K at Rockwell Elementary on Saturday morning.
He won in 17 minutes and 37 seconds, beating runner-up Chance Brown’s time of 18:04. Jesse Wood was third in 23:08.
The top female was Carrie Hayworth in 26:09. She was followed by Lauren Thurlow in 26:50 and Lily Kirkpatrick in 27:11.
Fun run winners were OJ Bost in 2 minutes and 53 seconds, Austin Fulk in 3:12 and Nate Hayworth in 3:21.
Rockwell resident Cornelius uses much of the flat course as one of his usual training routes, and said, “I hoped to get in the 17:30 range. I’ve been training more for 5Ks lately too.”
Cornelius is a successful marathon and half-marathon runner as well.
Race director Ricky Slaydon called the race a success and said, “We had a fine day for our first race. I want to thank the East Rowan Diamond Board, Rockwell Elementary School, the Sheriff’s Department and Rockwell Police and Fire Departments.”

Runners and walkers will have a chance to make a significant contribution to the Rowan County School System special needs classrooms by participating in the second annual Carson Prowl 5K on Sunday, April 13.
Starting time for the 5K run/walk is at 2 p.m. and the half-mile fun run will follow at 2:50 p.m.
The race course is two laps around the perimeter of the school campus, allowing spectators to see participants often during the race.
Awards will be given to the top three males and females, and in 15 male and female age groups. All pre-registered runners and walkers will get dri-fit race shirts. Race day registrants will get them while they last.
