Caroline Forbis struck out 12 and walked only one to lead Salisbury to a 7-0 win against Statesville on Wednesday.

• A West-Carson makeup game was rained out and rescheduled for today.

Prep soccer

Salisbury’s soccer team lost 4-0 to Davie County on Wednesday.

Brooke Hedgepeth scored two goals for the War Eagles (2-1). Katelyn Hernandez and Claire Devereaux scored one each.

Salisbury (2-1) had its share of opportunities but couldn’t cash in. Coach Matt Parrish said Nellie Brown, Katie Bullock and Amelia Steinman played “solid games.”

Juliana Anderson made several good saves in goal.

Salisbury is at South Rowan today at 5:30 p.m.

• In West Rowan’s 3-0 win against South Rowan on Tuesday, Victoria Patterson scored two goals, while Mariah Coleman had one. Josie Heglar had two assists.

Prep baseball

The East Rowan-Carson makeup game was washed out on Wednesday.

The jayvee game was played Wednesday. The varsity teams will try to get their game in today at 6 p.m. at Carson.

• Salisbury-Statesville was rained out and rescheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Prep track

Carson’s boys scored 101.5 points and won a track meet with Cox Mill (52.5) and South Rowan (31).

Carson winners were Tre Williams (discus, 129 feet, 6 inches), Hunter Kimball (1600, 5:02), Zach Taylor (110 hurdles, 17.8 seconds), Garrett Ingold (3200, 10:51), MyQuon Stout (shot put, 47-5), Andrew Hower (long jump. 21-1 and high jump, 6-6), Cameron Barringer (pole vault) and Danyal Sherer (800, 2:06).

In the relays, Carson won the 4x400 (3:44) and 4x800 (9:00).

South Rowan’s Tyreek Wilder won the 300 hurdles (45.6).


The Cox Mill girls scored 74.5 points to top Carson (70.5) and South (38).

Winning for the Carson girls were Sara Gunter (discus, 77-4 and shot put, 25-8), Hannah Barringer (3200), Caitlyn Blais (triple jump, 29-5 1/2), Krystina McGrady (long jump, 12-7 1/2) and Cierra Josey (high jump, 4-4).

In the relays, South Rowan won the 4x800 (12:21).

South’s Dakotah Lambert won the pole vault (9-0).

College softball

Catawba swept a doubleheader from visiting GRU Augusta on Wednesday at Whitley Field.

Catawba (15-6) won by 4-2 and 8-6 scores.

Carley Tysinger tied her own school record with 14 strikeouts in the opener. Holli Chandler’s two-run double in the sixth inning broke a 2-all tie.

Kelsey Burgess hit a two-run homer with bad weather approaching to decide the nightcap.

Catawba rallied with the help of a run-scoring double by Kim Fesperman (South Rowan) and a grand slam by Tysinger.

• Ericka Nesbitt (East Rowan) went 2-for-3, scored a run and stole a base in Campbell’s 9-3 win against UNC on Tuesday.

College golf

Catawba’s Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) shot 84-77 — 161 in the Hilton Head Lakes Invitational. She finished 13th and led the Indians to a 15th-place finish. Catawba’s Leslie Long shot 167.

College lacrosse

Catawba’s men won 9-8 in overtime at Rollins on Wednesday.

Trevor Sieracki scored the wining goal on John Scheich’s assist. Davis Hughes scored four goals.

College baseball

Clemson (10-5) edged Appalachian State 2-1 on Wednesday. Sean Mason pitched a complete game for the Mountaineers (4-13).

• Belmont Abbey’s Forrest Buchanan (Salisbury) pitched well in relief on Tuesday and helped the Crusaders beat Lenoir-Rhyne 4-2.

7th-grade hoops

West Middle’s boys won 42-34 against Knox.

Robert Caldwell scored 10 points and made five steals for West (7-6). Jacob Perez scored nine, DeVae Vaughn and Payne Stolsworth scored six each, and Cole Hales had five.

Perez had seven rebounds, while Vaughn had six.

West takes on China Grove today.

Local golf

The team of Mallory McDaniel (Kannapolis) and Jim Christy (China Grove) won first gross in the Senior Four-Ball Tournament at Pine Lake Country Club in Charlotte. They shot 31-35-67.


The famed Harlem Globetrotters will be making an appearance at Catawba on Wednesday, March 19.

Kannapolis Komets

The Kannapolis Komets will hold tryouts for middle school and high school girls basketball teams on Sunday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at Kannapolis Middle School on Oakwood Ave.
