Elementary Honors Choral concert Saturday

The 10th annual Rowan County Elementary Honors Choral Festival Concert will be Saturday, March 15 at 3 p.m. at West Rowan High School.

Rowan-Salisbury fifth-graders will perform under the direction of Sally K. Albrecht.

The festival is made possible through a grant from the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation.

Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG offers scholarships

Salisbury-Rowan Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) has announced it will be offering six $1,000 scholarships to Rowan County gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and their straight allies for academic year 2014-15. The six scholarships are offered to all Rowan County public, private and home-schooled seniors as well as Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Early College students.

In the seven years since its inception in 2007, The Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG Scholarship Foundation has awarded 22 $1,000 scholarships to deserving Rowan County students.

Scholarship applications are available at all seven local high schools guidance offices or their respective websites. They can also be downloaded from the Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG website at The deadline to submit application is April 1 and all candidates will be notified of the outcome by April 30.

Catawba student a delegate at convention

Kristi Leonard of Rockwell, a student at Catawba College who serves as the 2013-14 Student North Carolina Association of Educators president at the college, will serve as a delegate for Catawba’s SNCAE chapter, at the North Carolina Association of Educators Constitutional Convention March 21 and 22 in Hickory.

Leonard is majoring in elementary education at Catawba.
