Rowan Redbuds

Rowan Redbuds Garden Club met for its monthly meeting on Jan. 24, at Rowan Public Library. There were 22 members and one guest in attendance. President Anganetta Dover presided.

Various service projects were discussed, including the plans underway for the gardens at the library and the Salisbury uptown planters, which were recently completed. There are possibilities for other projects in the community in the future.

Members are encouraged to attend upcoming gardening meetings and symposiums throughout the state. In addition, the club is planning several day trips in the coming months to area gardens. These are excellent ways to increase gardening knowledge and network with other gardeners.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Stanback Room of the library at 1 p.m. Anyone interested in learning more about plants and gardening is encouraged to attend. Contact Mrs. Dover at 704-638-0575 or anganettadover@fibrant.com. Also, check out the garden club on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/RowanRedbudsGardenClub

Kneeling Gardeners

KANNAPOLIS — Kneeling Gardeners met at 7 p.m. on Jan. 27 at Trinity Methodist Church. Thirty members and visitors in attendance.

Speaker David Morris, a horticulturist, presented ways to achieve and maintain plant health in gardens and lawns. Possible problems include disease, insects, fungus, improper soil, amount of sunlight and water, etc. Applying a remedy without properly identifying the problem generally leads to more problems. He provided handouts addressing plant problems and methods for control.

Following the program, new officers for 2014 were introduced: Brenda Trott and Earl Gray, co-presidents; Christina Wielandt, vice-president; Betty Walker, recording and public relations secretary; Janelle Murray and Jan Query, co-chaplains; Gail Puntch, hospitality coordinator; Lou Cable, corresponding secretary; Judy Coggins, treasurer; Ann Rollins, historian; and Les Puntch, photographer.

Refreshments were provided by Peggy Broome, Gail Puntch, Jill Roach, Ann Rollins and Mildred Turner.

Kneeling Gardeners will meet on Feb. 24 when Brenda Trott will present “The Traveling Gardener.” Anyone interested in gardening is welcomed to attend. For more information, call 704-933-1127.
