William Lester Steinman, 15, is receiving his Eagle Scout award today, Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at First United Methodist Church of Salisbury.
Will began his Scouting adventure with Troop 442 as a Tiger Cub in the fall of 2004. As a Cub Scout, Will earned the God and Me, God and Family and Cub Scouts’ highest award, the Arrow of Light.
As a Boy Scout, Will earned 33 Merit Badges and completed more than 76 nights of camping. He served as Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader and a Philmont Crew Leader. Will completed 10 days with the Occoneechee Council at the 2010 Centennial Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort AP Hill, Va. and a 70-mile backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, New Mexico in 2013. He attended summer camps at Camp John J. Barnhardt and Camp Daniel Boone.
Will is a member of the Order of the Arrow and, along with members of Troop 442, participated in North Carolina’s Big Sweep project for several years, cleaning trash from Falls Reservoir. He earned the Conservation Good Turn award in 2011, Philmont Arrowhead, 50-Miler (Canoeing), 50-Miler (Backpacking), Philmont’s Duty to God, Wilderness Pledge Achievement, Kayaking BSA and Mile Swim awards.
The backpacking trips that Will participated in include Birkhead Wilderness Area, South Mountains State Park, Uwharrie Mountains, Mt. Mitchell, Hunt Fish Falls (mountains to sea trail system), Mt. Rogers, Grandfather Mountain Profile Trail, Land Trust Point Road in Davie County and Philmont, N.M. His canoe trips include Lumber River, New River, Congaree River, Nantahala River, Falls Lake, Lake Tillery, Yadkin River, South Yadkin River, Roanoke River and Tuckaseegee River.
For his Eagle Scout leadership service project, Will planned and led a team of Scouts and 60 volunteers in serving 212 hours towards cleaning up the athletic areas at Knox Middle School. The project included a landscaped area near the football field.
A sophomore at Salisbury High School, Will participates in football, baseball, the Heritage Panel and Key Club.
An active member of First United Methodist Church, Will is active in the youth group and serves as an Acolyte.
Will is the son of Todd and Mary Heather Steinman of Salisbury.
