Unborn child dies in head-on accident

An unborn baby has died following a two-vehicle head-on collision earlier today at the intersection of South Main and West Horah streets. The mother’s name has not been released pending notification of family. She was taken to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. According to a release from the Salisbury Police Department, “the driver is in unstable condition.”

The woman, who is believed to be from Davie County, was traveling north on South Main Street when her 2011 Chevrolet passenger car crossed the center line and collided with a 2002 Ford F250 pickup. The crash occurred at 12:01 p.m.

She was not wearing a seatbelt, but was not ejected from the vehicle. It is unclear if she blacked out or had a medical emergency. The woman was around 35 weeks pregnant, said Salisbury Police Capt. Shelia Lingle.

Police are working to confirm details regarding the woman. Police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Police say she was speeding, but officials are working to obtain final results on the speed limit.

The truck was driven by Tommy Euart, 65, of Salisbury, who police say stopped when he saw the approaching vehicle. Euart honked his horn to warn the motorist, but was struck. He did not appear to be injured.
