Avis Fair Wilkins Monroe recently celebrated her 104th birthday at a reception given in her honor in the social hall of the historic Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, which was co-founded 150 years ago by her grandfather, Berry Davis.

The celebration, which was given by her daughters, Jean Little of Salisbury and Joan Pemberton and Avis Crawley of the Bronx, N.Y., was attended by family members and her church family and friends.

MOCKSVILLE — At the August board meeting, the Broadway’s Best Theatre Company welcomed three new board members: Gayle Compton will take over as president of the Theatre Guild for Pat Messick, who is stepping down after two years of service; Ina Beavers will serve as secretary for the next year; Paul Bledsoe will work with the marketing committee.

In addition, Broadway’s Best has officially launched a theatre renovation fundraising campaign.

Funds will first be used to add new restrooms to the future Summer Stock Theatre. After that project, funds will be used to upgrade heating, air conditioning and insulation to offer patrons more comfort and to increase efficiency and reduce noise.

The theatre is a 5013C nonprofit and all contributions are tax deductible.
