EAST SPENCER — A midmorning fire gutted a home in the 100 block of Geroid Street on Saturday.

The single-story home was supposed to be vacant, according to Terria Robbins, an onlooker at the scene.

Robbins said her aunt was the owner of the property, but did not provide her name or further information. Robbins said the house had been empty for “about 10 years.”

Deputy Chief Marshal Moore of the East Spencer Fire Department said the cause of the fire was unclear, and an official investigation is ongoing. However, he said the fire appeared to be unintentional.

“We did have a street person living there,” Moore said. No injuries were reported to onlookers or firefighters.

East Spencer Police, firefighters from Miller’s Ferry, Salisbury, Granite Quarry, Union and Spencer departments and the Rowan County Rescue Squad also responded.
