Seniors’ health insurance program offers help

The Rowan County Seniorsí Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), based at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, has just completed another busy annual enrollment period. Each year from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, the local SHIIP office assists Medicare clients in reviewing or changing their prescription drug plans. This can often result in savings of hundreds of dollars by switching to a more appropriate drug plan. During the 2013 AEP, the local SHIIP office assisted 214 citizens of Rowan County with Medicare counseling.

SHIIP is also available all year long to answer your Medicare questions. We help those who are new to Medicare to pick a prescription drug plan. The group assists clients with supplements or Medicare Advantage plans. For people who need special financial assistance, SHIIP can direct them to appropriate resources at Social Security or the Department of Social Services.

SHIIP set appointments for clients to meet with volunteer counselors, who are trained by the NC Department of Insurance. SHIIP offers unbiased information, with no sales pressure. SHIIPís counseling services are free, although donations are accepted to help expand programs.

The Seniorsí Health Insurance Information Program is a division of the NC Depart.ment of Insurance. To reach the Rowan County SHIIP Coordinators, call Susan Davis at 704-216-7703, or Steve Simpson at 704-216-7704. People can also contact the statewide SHIIP office at 1-800-443-9354, or www.ncshiip.com
