School board recognitions

At its meeting Nov. 20, the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education recognized:

• Jennifer Seller, a Corriher-Lipe Middle School student and winner of the Rowan-Salisbury School System’s 2013 holiday card contest.


• Jordan Owen, an East Rowan High School student who has been selected to be a member of the 2014 Army All-American Band.

• State championship teams from Salisbury High School: the girls golf team, the girls tennis team and the boys soccer team.

• Jason Chester, a West Rowan High School teacher selected to participate in the N.C. Agricultural Education Cohort for 2013-14 through the Agricultural Education Program at N.C. State University.

• Two schools that won Energy Star Renewal Awards, Faith Elementary and Cleveland Elementary.

Overton Explorers of the Week

The following students were recognized as Explorers of the Week during the month of November for demonstrating excellent behavior throughout the school at Overton Elementary School:

Kindergarten — Harmoni Simmon, Brennon Swindle, Kate Preslar and Clear Wesley; First grade — Micah Bailey, Audrey Urbina, Warren Fesperman and Zyalon Simmon; Second grade — Dash Dixon, Camryn Martinez, Angel Galarza and Mary Reese Bowler; Third grade — Ethan Lutz, Danaesha Jackson, Yezabel Rodriguez and Kendall Colwell; Fourth grade — Kylie Geelen, Brittany Heald, Heavenlee Deneen and Tyler Pullium; Fifth Grade — Lauryn Alexander, Ben Blumenthal, Temoni Wiggins and Chauncey Morris.

North Rowan band

The North Rowan Marching Band recently concluded it’s competition season. The band won first place in music, general effect, and percussion, and second place in marching, visual ensemble, and drum major at Catawba College where the band scored second place band in class A with a rating of excellent. The band then won first place in percussion and marching and second place in visual ensemble, music and general effect at East Rowan High School, where the band scored second place band in class AA. The band also recently won the 2014 Honor Band award and first place percussion in the Holiday Caravan Parade.

Scholarship winners

The Goldman Scholarship was presented to two 2013 graduates of the Rowan-Salisbury School System. The four-year scholarship is administered by the Salisbury branch of the American Association of University Women in memory of Helen Sokol Goldman and Julius L. Goldman.

Suzana Brborovic, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dragisa Brborovic, graduated from Salisbury High School. She is attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Zehra Celeste Khan, daughter of Barbara and Al Welter, graduated from Jesse Carson High School and is attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The Goldman Scholarship Fund awards educational scholarships to female students through a competitive process that considers academic achievement, extracurricular activities, financial need, references and the applicant’s statement of her personal aspirations and educational goals.
