Spencer lands $206,000 grant to finish Spencer Woods
SPENCER — With help from the LandTrust of Central North Carolina, Spencer has landed a $206,000 state grant to finish Spencer Woods.
The grant, which requires a local match for a total of $412,000, will pay to implement the Spencer Woods Master Plan including trails, parking, signs, benches, an observation deck, accessibility for disabled visitors and more in the 42-acre forest walking distance from downtown Spencer.
The town won a $200,000 grant last year to buy Spencer Woods from the LandTrust, which bought the forest from a developer to save it from clear cutting.
“There’s not enough thanks that can be offered to the private donors who have made the project and both of these grants possible,” Town Manager Larry Smith said.
The LandTrust already has the matching funds lined up for the grant, which came from the N.C. Parks And Recreation Trust Fund, Executive Director Jason Walser said. Work should start in early 2014, he said.
