Cleveland voters choosing three for board

CLEVELAND — Clifford Shoemaker has lived in Cleveland for 60 years, and he said today the current crop of town commissioners is doing a good job.

“They’re a pretty good bunch here in Cleveland,” he said.

But there will be at least one new member on the Board of Commissioners when voting closes tonight. With Danny Gabriel running unopposed for mayor — current Mayor John Steele did not seek re-election — his board seat is open.

Voters are filing three seats on the board.

Incumbents Pat Phifer and Travis Summitt are seeking re-election and challengers Gerald Osborne and Richard Taylor are each hoping to grab a spot.

Martha Faust said she voted for some new voices on the board.

“I think we just need changes here,” she said. “No matter what the town board votes on, they all agree. There’s never any opposition.”

Whoever is elected, Shoemaker, 83, said he sees things “that need to be done around Cleveland, and I hope they will get them done.”

Shoemaker said he thinks Gabriel will be a good mayor.

“Danny has been working with the commissioners a good while, and I appreciate what he’s done .. and I think he’ll do even better as mayor,” he said.

Polls close at 7:30 p.m.
