East Spencer turnout slow this afternoon

EAST SPENCER — With just 69 voters at 2 p.m. in East Spencer, the town’s aldermen race could be a tight one.

Johnnye Camps was one of the 69 who voted Tuesday. She said she voted for challengers Titus King, Robert Smith and incumbent Tammy Corpening for the three open seats.

“I voted for them because it’s good to have change,” Camps said. When asked about the kind of change she was hoping for, Camps said she didn’t think the current board accomplished much in the last term.

One election judge at the polls said the turnout was, “pretty slow,” while another said it seemed typical for an off-year election.

Another voter, who declined to provide her name, said she voted for incumbents Phronice Johnson, Tammy Corpening and challenger Otis Gibson. She said the current board has worked well with Mayor Barbara Mallett and said the board is starting to provide projects that benefit the community.

Mallett is running unopposed for the mayoral seat.

In candidate forums, the candidates have frequently discussed two hot-button issues: perpetually high water and sewer rates and the future of the East Spencer Police Department.

The polls will remain open until 7:30 p.m. Residents can vote at the East Spencer Town Hall at 105 S. Long St.
