Here’s a July 1993 photograph from the Post files showing kids enjoying the spring-fed waters of Granite Lake, the former swimming hole off U.S. 52 in Granite Quarry. As a business, Granite Lake closed after the summer of 1999. Rufus and Adam ‘Esau’ Peeler built Granite Lake in 1926 out of a large meadow, with several springs supplying the water. Called ‘Peeler’s Lake’ then, the Post described it as ‘a beautiful outing place and amusement resort.’ Wade and Blue Kepley bought the lake from the Peelers in 1952. It closed from 1969-72 because of a bathhouse fire, but reopened in 1973. Wade Kepley sold the business to Bill and Leigh Ann Elliott in 1984, and they operated it for its last 16 years. The property included 7 acres, including the lake with its huge sliding board, high dive, sunning deck, picnic area and barbecue grills. Some 20 tons of sand were brought in each year to create a beach area. In recent years, the town of Granite Quarry has transformed this spot into its cherished Granite Lake Park, which includes a shelter, walking trails, playground and fountain in the lake.
