SALISBURY – Inmate Kevin A. Barrett, 44, was found dead early this morning at Piedmont Correctional Institution, the victim of an apparent suicide by hanging. The Salisbury Police Department is investigating.
Barrett had returned to prison Oct. 9 as the result of a post-release supervision violation related to an armed robbery at a Wilco Convenience Store in Greensboro on Aug. 28. Barrett was charged with several offenses in connection with that incident, including assault with a deadly weapon, robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Those charges are still pending in Guilford County.
According to information from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, on March 30, Barrett was released from prison and began post-release supervision after serving 13 years as a habitual felon.
