East Baseball Camp
East Rowan High’s baseball program and East Rowan Diamond Sports are partnering for a one-day baseball/softball camp on Saturday, Nov. 9.
The primary purpose of the camp is to benefit Rowan Helping Ministries.
“We started doing this last year because so many people are struggling with hard times, and Thanksving isn’t far away,” East Rowan coach Brian Hightower said. “We’re just trying to help Rowan Helping Ministries get plenty of food together.”
Registration for the camp is from 8:30-9 a.m. the day of the camp. The three-hour camp will be led by Hightower, one of the most successful coaches in county history, 9 until noon at Staton Field/Mathis Field.
Admission to the camp is four canned food items per child. Suggested items are canned fruit, canned meat, canned soup, peanut butter and cereal.
Lunch will be provided for campers from noon until 1 p.m.
The camp is for ages 5-14 and wil be directed by Hightower, Joe Hudson and Bob Teague.
“We’ve got 30-plus kids heavily involved in our fall baseball program, and they’ll be helping,” Hightower said. “They’re great kids, and they’re doing great in school. East Rowan has been a scholar-athlete baseball team (3.1 GPA or better) eight straight years. I think it’s important that people recognize that these guys are not just trying to raise money and win baseball games. They’re also trying to do the right things, trying to help out the community.”
All those attending are encouraged to bring a friend from outside the ERDS league.
The rain date is Nov. 16.
