KANNAPOLIS — The city begins loose-leaf collection service this week. This free curbside service will be offered every other week through March 7, 2014. During the loose-leaf collection period, it is not necessary to bag leaves for them to be collected.
Leaves must be placed at the curb or along the ditch line, not in ditches, in rows parallel with street by 7 a.m. on the day of collection to ensure collection on the scheduled day. Leaves mixed with limbs, other yard waste, gravel, glass or other solid matter will not be collected and leaves in garbage containers will not be collected. Leaves must be clear of water meters and fences and placed on the street side of retaining walls. Leaves should also be clear of sidewalks and the street.
Since leaves are banned from landfills by North Carolina state law, they cannot be placed in garbage containers. The city provides collection of leaves for mulching and composting. After the loose-leaf collection season is over, leaves must be bagged for collection.
