First day of early voting has measly turnout
SALISBURY — Rowan Elections Director Nancy Evans says maybe it was because of a “rainy, icky day.”
Voter turnout for this year’s municipal elections in Rowan County limped out of the starting gate Thursday, the first day for early voting.
By 3:15 p.m., only 23 people had taken advantage of voting early at the Rowan Public Library. The library at 201 W. Fisher St. is the only place to vote early for any of the municipal races in Rowan.
“The weather could have something to do with it,” Evans said.
Election Day will be Nov. 5 for those municipal voters choosing to wait.
Elections are being held in Salisbury, Spencer, East Spencer, China Grove, Cleveland, Faith, Granite Quarry, Kannapolis, Landis and Rockwell.
Early voting is available at the library — enter in the back off Church Street — from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday through Nov. 1 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 2.
The location also is a same-day registration spot. With the correct documentation proving residence, a person can register and vote at the library voting site, if he or she is not already registered.
Evans says to call the Rowan County Board of Elections at 704-216-8140 for information on what the proper documentation is.
Here is some other information regarding the municipal elections: Applications for absentee ballots are being taken through Oct. 29 at the Board of Elections, 130 W. Innes St., and are due back Nov. 4. On Election Day — Tuesday, Nov. 5 — polls in the municipalities will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
