RALEIGH (AP) — Potentially thousands of North Carolina state workers will be sent home or see hour and pay reductions as the federal government enters a partial shutdown because of the spending showdown between President Obama and Congress.
Gov. Pat McCrory told the Council of State on Tuesday that the Department of Health and Human Services will be most affected by the stalemate in Washington.
The agency says as many as 4,500 workers are affected because they are totally or partially funded by the federal government. HHS spokesman Ricky Diaz says the federal government is sending instructions on how to handle those workers.
A memo dated Monday from State Budget Director Art Pope says some employees would be furloughed until a stop-gap spending measure is passed on Capitol Hill.
