Top-ranked Cavaliers 6-0
MARSHVILLE — For the second straight week, North Rowan traveled around to bring its top-ranked act to a newfound audience.
The Cavaliers, unanimously picked No. 1 in the state 2A AP poll this week, took the show on the road in a 34-7 win at Forest Hills to improve to 6-0 for the first time since 1994.
“I was proud of our guys,” North coach Joe Nixon said. “We had a long road trip and we went down and conducted ourselves well.”
North enjoyed a 28-0 lead at halftime and were never dealt a serious blow.
North quarterback Jareke Chambers brought his touchdown total 18 with two short runs and two passes into the end zone. Chambers, who broke a school record with six touchdowns in a 52-7 thrashing of Providence Grove, finished with 124 yards passing and 137 rushing. The junior signal-caller scored on a two-yard push on North’s first drive and punched it in from a yard out later in the first quarter.
North is now averaging 36 points a game as it completed its non-conference slate.
“I’m really pleased with our guys their effort tonight,” Nixon said. “We just want to get better every week. We’ll take this open week to get healthy.”
Senior Xavier Robinson got some carries and found the end zone in the second half in addition to recovering a fumble.
Kasaun Coney carried the ball 10 times for 69 yards. Andre Cowan, who had a 128-yard night last week, added 31 yards on eight carries.
North held FH (1-5) to 93 yards rushing and 63 passing.
“Our defense gave it to us on a short field,” Nixon said. They had some skill guys on their side. To hold them to seven points is a good effort.”
Chambers completed 8 of 14 passes for 124 yards. In the second quarter, Chambers hit Sakil Harrison for a 12-yard TD pass and Coney for a 22-yard TD. Wesley Jeffries caught a two-point conversion to end the first half scoring.
FH broke up the shotout with a third-quarter score. Robinson scored from a yard out in the fourth quarter.
Harrison was the leading receiver with four catches for 52 yards.
