CHINA GROVE — What began as a domestic disturbance call led authorities to charge a China Grove man with growing marijuana in his home.
Scott Carpenter, 50, of the 100 block of Forsaken Drive, is charged with felony maintaining a dwelling place for controlled substances, felony manufacturing a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
A Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the home after Scott Carpenter called about his wife Kathleen Carpenter, whom he said was threatening to harm herself and “destroy the house.”
When deputies arrived Friday night around 10, they said the couple were involved in a shouting match over text messages and allegations of cheating.
While at the home, Kathleen, yelled “he threw marijuana plants in the woods before y’all got here.”
She showed the deputy where the plants were hidden. The officer found two marijuana plants in a flower pot hidden under a wooden deck. The other plant had been uprooted and was hidden inside an outbuilding.
Scott Carpenter admitted to having heat lamps in the basement. He told the deputy the marijuana was for personal use. He has since been released under $1,000 secured bond.
