RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s secretary of the department of Public Safety is resigning, after six months on the job.
Gov. Pat McCrory announced Friday that Kiernan Shanahan will step down at the end of the month.
McCrory says Shanahan wants to focus on his law firm, other business obligations and to support his wife, who has been promoted from captain to admiral in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
Shanahan took the job when McCrory took office in January. Shanahan took a leave of office from his law practice in May, after being questioned about a potential conflict of interest.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Shanahan had continued to provide legal advice to private clients after McCrory named him to oversee the Highway Patrol, state prison system and other law enforcement agencies.
