Prep soccer

Salisbury (7-1) beat Ledford 5-1 on Thursday.

Landon Goodman’s header on a cross by Carlos Zanudo gave the Hornets the first goal. Ledford scored on a penalty kick for a 1-1 tie at halftime.

Emmy Turcios assisted on goal by Bobby Cardelle to put Salisbury ahead to stay, and Cardelle assisted on a left-footed goal by Clint Comadoll for a 3-1 lead. Josua Lynch’s first career goal on a PK made it 4-1. The Hornets closed the scoring when Matt Washko got his first career goal off a blast by John Canipe that was deflected by the keeper.

“It was a classic case of right place at the right time, and he knew what to do with it,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “He hit a top-shelf, back-post shot that found side netting from 14 yards out. It was outstanding.”

Ranked second in 2A, Salisbury is at home against Central Cabarrus, CATA and CCC opponent East Davidson on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

• Salisbury’s jayvees won 3-1.

Whether you were a former baseball player, softball player or a college alum you are invited to play in softball games which will be played at Newman Park prior to the football game. You will also still have plenty of time for tailgating before the game.

Those interested in playing will be divided into teams with men playing at noon and 1 p.m. and the women at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Each game will be limited to one hour. All you will need to play is a glove and sneakers, but no spikes or cleats.

Join the fun and fellowship. Games will use 70-foot bases and you will be swinging for the big fence at Newman Park. Contact coach Jim Gantt at or 704-637-4281.
