A Christian organization based near Winston-Salem says more than 1,000 people have said they’ll attend a rally for prayer before Rowan County commissioners meet Monday.

Return America is hosting the rally at the Rowan County Administration Building, 130 W. Innes St. The rally starts at 5:30 p.m. Commissioners meet at 6 p.m.

The purpose of the rally, a news release said, is to support the Rowan County commissioners in their efforts to continue praying sectarian prayer. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit earlier this year on behalf of three county residents seeking to halt the prayers at the start of commissioners’ meetings, which have been overwhelmingly Christian.

The rally is also called to send a signal of support for freedom of religious expression across America, and especially to Washington, D.C., in view of the upcoming hearing on prayer to be heard by the United States Supreme Court in November, the news release said.

Dr. Ron Baity, president of Return America, will be joined by the lead attorney for the Rowan County commissioners, David Gibbs, III, in addressing supporters.

Return America previously brought thousands of people to Raleigh in support of the North Carolina Marriage Amendment.
