LANDIS — Retired teacher and former correctional officer Dorland Abernathy is throwing his hat into the ring and is running for a seat on the Landis town board.

Abernathy, 63, taught English, choir and math for more than 30 years. He also worked for 10 years at Central Prison and Piedmont Correctional Institute as a corrections officer.

The south Rowan native said his priorities are to do what is right for the residents of Landis. Just a few months ago Abernathy spoke at a town meeting where he asked for a return to a time when residents respected one another.

He said his other priorities are to focus on what is “necessary” rather than on “that would be nice.” Abernathy thinks people should remember “every cent spent by the town comes from someone’s pocket.”

He graduated from South Rowan High in 1967 and received his bachelor of arts degree from Bob Jones University’s school of religion. He also received an English degree from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Abernathy also studied at Livingstone College and N.C. State University. He is a member and assistant Sunday school superintendent at Landis Baptist Church.

Abernathy has been married to Colette Honeycutt Abernathy for 32 years and they have five children and 11 grandchildren.
