SALISBURY — The new North Second Creek bridge on Woodleaf Roadis now open, three weeks ahead of schedule.
The road has been closed between Godbey Road and Goodson Road since June 25. Woodleaf drivers were instructed to take a detour on N.C. 801 and U.S. 70 when traveling to and from Salisbury.
Officials with the N.C. Department of Transportation had said construction would be finished by Dec. 31.
The old bridge was built in 1955 and had a sufficiency rating of 2 out of 100. That does not mean the bridge was unsafe, the transportation departmentsaid. It means the bridge was not built to modern design standards and no longer met theneeds of today’s drivers.
Lee Construction Company of the Carolinas Inc., of Charlotte, was awarded a $1.3 million contract for the project.
