Students have less than a month left to enroll in a new program designed to help them transition effectively from high school to college.

The Rowan County Crosby Scholars program is free for all public middle and high school students in Rowan County. The deadline is Oct. 1 for this year’s applications, which can be submitted online at crosbyscholarsrowan.org or in the guidance offices of local schools.

Students may apply for the program as early as sixth grade, but they must enroll by tenth grade. They must also pledge to stay alcohol and drug free and agree to perform at least two hours of community service per year.

Crosby Scholars began in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System 20 years ago. In 2012, 100 percent of senior program participants graduated high school and 98 percent enrolled in either a two- or four-year college. In addition, Crosby Scholars in Forsyth County performed 60,000 hours of community service in 2012.

Crosby Scholars in sixth through eighth grades focus on life and study skills, while older students work on academic skills, leadership development, financial aid planning, college admissions and SAT preparation.
