A Salisbury couple were charged with drug possession over the weekend following a search of their Civic Park apartment.

The Salisbury Police Department’s Police Interdiction Team (PIT) were at the Hall Street complex on Friday evening. An officer knocked on the apartment and asked to search.

The renter, Diatra Symone Litaker, gave the officer consent to search the apartment. The officer found a plastic bag and marijuana stems inside a trash bag. Litaker told her children to sit down on the couch, but when officers checked underneath them, they found more marijuana and some money. Officers found 13.6 grams (.48 ounces) of marijuana, digital scales and $318.90 under the couch.

Litaker, 22, of Hall Street, was charged possession with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a controlled substance and maintaining a dwelling place for controlled substances, both felonies.

She has since been released from the county jail under a $5,000 secured bond.

Her boyfriend, Desmond Toomer, was asked if he could be checked. Officers noticed a bulge in his front pocket and asked him if he had any weapons. Toomer told the officer he had money in his pockets.

However, when officers searched Toomer’s pocket, he had 10.8 grams (.38 ounces) of individually wrapped marijuana.

Toomer, 28, also of Hall Street, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with the intent to manufacture. Toomer remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.

It’s not the first time the couple have been arrested and charged together. The two were charged in February with armed robbery. Litaker and Toomer, along with another man, forced their way into an apartment at Zion Hills.

Litaker has been convicted of a number of driving infractions. Toomer was convicted of assault on a female, larceny, communicating threats and resisting arrest.
