Salisbury City Council voted today to ask Rowan County commissioners to write a letter to the Local Government Commission, pledging support for the downtown school central office and promising not to sue the city.
City officials asked county commissioners to publicly confirm earlier statements that they have washed their hands of the project and do not oppose the city's desire to build a three-story office building at 329 S. Main St. and lease it to the school system.
The city also wants county commissioners to hold a meeting and vote on whether they support the project.
If the county provides the letter, the city plans to resubmit its application to the LGC. The city wants permission to borrow $7.37 million to construct the central office.
The city also asked commissioners to agree to not oppose a long-term lease by the school system for the building.
