Freeze column: RCCC, hospital offer opportunities for improved fitness
First thing, I wanted to thank all the readers again for your thoughts on my bicycle ride. It is very rewarding when you folks mention the ride to me, and that you followed along. In the end, I am so glad that you enjoyed reading and riding with me. I am eternally grateful for that.
My life is returning to normal, and with that comes the fall season and great weather. Once again, Rowan and Cabarrus residents will have plenty of chances to get involved in several classes that will be both fun and good for you.
Novant Health Rowan Medical Center will partner with the Salisbury Rowan Runners and Salisbury Parks and Recreation to offer a Beginning Runners Training Program at the hospital. Classes will meet this fall on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. in the training room beside the information desk. Cost for the class is $60, payable on the first night of the class. The fee includes a dri-fit shirt and entry into a 5K after completion of the class. Call Steve Clark at 704-216-2709 for more information or me at 704-310-6741.
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College has two classes called Fortify Your Fitness (and Finish a 5K). Both will be at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis. A Monday evening class will start at 5:45 p.m., and a Tuesday morning class will start at 8 a.m. Both classes will be in the RCCC Building, Room 202, and also continue for eight weeks. Registration is available at www.rccc.edu. Select WebAdvisor at the top of the page, click “Students,” then “Register and pay for Continuing Education Classes.” Participants can also register at the start of the first class. Cost is also $60, and will include a dri-fit commemorative shirt and one 5K race. Information is available by calling 704-310-6741.
RCCC is also offering other personal enrichment possibilities. Active classes include beginning yoga, core stability, and T’ai Chi for Balance. Additional classes include Organize Your Space; American Sign Language; Digital Photography: How to Use Your Digital Camera; Aromatherapy: Essence and Essential Oils; Retirement; Healthcare and New Legislation; Photoshop Elements; and Motorcycle Basic Rider Course.
Classroom topics for fitness and running classes will include stretching, strengthening, nutrition, running form, injury prevention and safety. Shoes, as well as running clothing and equipment will be demonstrated at the second meeting of each class. Do not buy new shoes for the class until you hear this talk about proper fitting of the shoe style that is right for you. A good running shoe chosen for you by experienced personnel at a running store will enhance the program. At the same time, the wrong purchase could cause running form issues or even injury.
The classes are intended for beginning runners or those who want to improve their overall fitness level. Former runners who need a structured program for a restart will also benefit from taking these classes. Bring a water bottle and a pen, and wear appropriate running apparel on the first night of class. The classroom session each night will last about 30 minutes. We will begin with a half mile of run/walking on that night, and gradually move up in distance over the eight weeks. On the last night of class, a measured and timed 3.1 mile run/walk will precede a graduation celebration complete with healthy refreshments and a diploma.
All class participants will receive a training schedule and individualized instruction. Participants are encouraged to proceed at their own level and have fun while doing it. All of the classes are headed by a nationally certified running coach, personal trainer and fitness professional.
For those who don’t prefer a group setting or need more advanced training, that training is available at www.Ulearn2run.com. Half marathon and marathon training plans are popular, as well as training for speed improvement or running form efficiency. Call 704-310-6741 with questions.
Come join us in one of these classes. The sense of well-being and accomplishment is contagious, and the rewards can change your life. Whether it is a group setting or individual training, consider one of these offerings.
