SALISBURY — Ronnie Gallagher, longtime sports editor of the Salisbury Post, died suddenly this morning.

He woke up ill early this morning and went to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center where he died.

“This is sad and shocking news,” said Post Editor Elizabeth Cook. “No one loved sports or the Salisbury Post more than Ronnie Gallagher.”

Gallagher had recently been hospitalized for a minor heart attack and other ailments but had returned to work this week. He has a football column in today’s paper.

Gallagher was 57.

He became sports editor in 1997 after 2 1/2 years as a sports writer. Gallagher began his sports career in 1980 at the Lexington Dispatch. In 1986, he became sports editor of the Davie County Enterprise. He joined the Post in 1995.

Gallagher is married to Joan and has two sons, Jack, a freshman at Methodist College, and Mackie, a high school student.
