Scholarship breakfast Saturday in Cleveland

The Cleveland Lions Club’s annual Joe Hall Scholarship Breakfast is this Saturday, Aug. 31, 7-10 a.m., at the Lions Den on Cemetery Street in Cleveland.

Signs will point the way from Highway 70, beginning at the fire station at School Street. Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, country ham, sausage, bacon, grits, gravy, homemade biscuits, coffee, tea and juice. Donations fund two scholarships for West Rowan High School students.

Joe W. Hall was a charter member of the Mount Ulla Lions Club, and a life member of the Cleveland Lions Club. He served these clubs for more than 40 years, and was active in the Cleveland Community Volunteer Fire Department. His other community service included being chair of the Cleveland Precinct of the Democratic Party and president of the Rowan County Farm Bureau. Because of the commitment shown by Joe and his wife Suzanne for education, the family has chosen to keep his memory alive with scholarship efforts. The family supports not only this effort, but also an effort with an endowed scholarship fund at Catawba College.

The annual breakfast began years ago as friends gathered for fun before the races at Darlington, S.C. Originating in backyards, the breakfast at some point moved to the Lions’ Den. Since his death in 1991, the breakfast has been known as the Joe Hall Memorial Breakfast.

The scholarship started as a joint effort with the Mount Ulla Lions Club, and later became the effort of the Cleveland Lions Club alone. The early awards were for $500 and grew to two scholarships, $1,000 each. The scholarship is among the longest-running awards in western Rowan County, dating back to 1981.

The Cleveland Lions Club is proud to continue this tradition, for it demonstrates our motto: We Serve.
