A Salisbury teen was charged after authorities found him sitting in a parking lot “connecting to wifi” from a local business.

The Salisbury Police charged Eugene Jameal Coney, 18, of the 1200 block of Short Street, with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

Police said Coney was sitting in his car at North Long and Short streets at a business that was closed. The officer asked what he was doing sitting at the business and he told them he was using his phone to connect to the wifi. The officer asked the teen if he had identification. Coney said he did not, but did provide the officer with his name.

The officer checked Coney for weapons and then asked if could check Coney’s backpack. He refused to let the officer search his backpack, but when he turned around the officer could see a marijuana grinder peeking through a mesh front pocket.

The officer checked the bag and found a 25-caliber handgun. Coney is expected in court in September regarding simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia charges, both of which are misdemeanors.

Coney remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $500 bond.
