Cedar Grove picnic
The annual Cedar Grove AME Zion Church picnic starts at 11 a.m. today. Food will be sold during the event, which features Gospel singing, face painting and bounce houses.
Mt. Zion Missionary
“Women of Faith: Nurturing the Mind, Body, and Spirit to be Equipped for Ministry” is the theme of the Women’s Day Celebration held today at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1920 Shirley Ave.
The Women’s Empowerment Luncheon starts at 10 a.m. with Rev. Debra Ellison, founder of At the Cross Ministries.
During the 11 a.m. service Sunday, the Rev. Prinn Deavens, regional clinical chaplain with the NC Dept. of Public Safety, will speak. Women are asked to wear white Sunday.
Lilly’s Chapel CoG
The Gospel Explosion at Lilly’s Chapel Church of God, 618 West Thomas St., continues at 7:30 p.m. today with various choirs, soloists, groups, praise dancers and mime ministries participating.
Set Free Church
Church services are at 5 p.m. Saturdays at Set Free Church. Justin Parker is the pastor. The church meets at The Inn, 1012 Mooresville N.C. 150. South Carolina Christian rock band Solid Ground will provide the music during the service.
Salem Lutheran Church, 5080 Sherrills Ford Road, will hold back to school blessings and prayers as well as the Blessing of the Bookbags during the traditional service at 10:45 a.m. Bring bookbags to the service. All students as well as teachers and staff will receive blessings, prayers and a gift keychain.
Mount Zion UCC
CHINA GROVE — Rally Day begins at 10 a.m. Sunday at Mount Zion United Church of Christ, 1415 S. Main St.
Combined classes for children and youth will gather in the fellowship hall for a special program. Adults meet in the new building.
The 11 a.m. service will feature a special service for blessing of the children’s school bookbags. Children and youth are invited to attend the Back to School Bash in the Hut from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
ROCKWELL — Immanuel Lutheran will hold a Blessing of the Backpacks service at 11 a.m. Sunday. All students and school personnel may bring their backpacks and lunch boxes for a dedication and blessing to the glory of God.
School faulty and staff are also invited to attend.
Anyone who is able to bring extra school supplies is asked to do so to assist Koontz Elementary School.
ROCKWELL — The Rev. Wayne Trexler will preach at the 122nd homecoming service at Lyerly Evangelical Church, 1320 Crescent Road, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Trexler has long-time connections with Lyerly Church, having grown up in its sister church, St. Luke’s Reformed.
After graduating from Catawba College and Southeastern Seminary, he taught Bible History at East Rowan High School and pastored several churches.
Lyerly Evangelical Church was organized in 1891 by Dr. J.M.L. Lyerly.
The Anna B. Hauser Missionary Society of Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, 306 North Church St., is sponsoring a talent and fashion gala at 4 p.m. today.
Models will sport clothes for all occasions. Robert Willis of High Point will be the featured model.
Virginia Williams Rush, a well-known local professional singer, will perform long with the Rush Family Singers. Bobby Gray of Kannapolis will perform gospel comedy. Dr. Grant Harrison, pastor of Soldiers Memorial, and his wife, Dr. Joanne Harrison, will headline other local individuals. A reception will follow in the church’s Enrichment Center. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Mt. Zion Lutheran
RICHFIELD — Students of all ages are invited to bring their backpacks to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. Sunday for a Blessing of the Backpacks. Along with prayers for students, church members will pray for all faculty and school staff.
The church will also host midweek worship service at 7 p.m. Tuesday evenings.
South River UMC
WOODLEAF — South River UMC, 2880 S. River Church Road, celebrates its 179th annual homecoming Sunday.
A joint worship service at 10:30 a.m. will blend the contemporary and traditional services.
A covered dish luncheonfollows at noon with an after- lunch concert at 1:30 p.m. by Matthew Weaver, a multitalented singer-songwriter-musician.

St. Matthews Lutheran
St.Matthews Lutheran Church, 9275 Bringle Ferry Road, will observe homecoming Sunday with the Rev. Mitchell E.Evans as guest speaker. Evans interned at St. Matthews in 1998 and graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary before being ordained in 2000.
Camper Service will not be held Sunday. Sunday school is at 9:30 a.m. and worship at 10:30 a.m., followed by the homecoming meal in the Family Life Center.
Wilburn & Wilburn
Rock Grove United Methodist Church, 1050 Rock Grove Church Road, hosts a concert by Wilburn & Wilburn during the 11 a.m. service Sunday. This is a free event, but a love offering will be taken.
First Calvary Baptist
The Deaconess Board of First Calvary Baptist Church, 400 S. Long St., will hold its annual observance during the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday.
Evangelist Cathye V. Marlin, associate minister of Fairview Heights Baptist Church, will speak.
First United Church of Christ, 207 West Horah St., celebrates the opening of the school year with a Blessings of the Backpacks during the 11 a.m. service Sunday.

KANNAPOLIS — The First Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis will conduct an Education Sunday service at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Students are invited to bring their bookbags for a prayer of blessing. Teachers and other school personnel are invited to bring a lesson planbook or other symbol for a prayer of blessing. The Rev. Darryl Evans will preach.
CLEVELAND — Cedar Grove AME Zion Church, 2430 Hildebrand Road, will observe homecoming Sunday.
The Rev. Dr. Bertha Pittman, pastor of Cedar Grove, will bring the 11 a.m. message. Lunch will be served at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Patrick Tate, pastor of Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church in East Spencer, will be the 3 p.m. speaker.
Revival services are at 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. The Rev. Dr. Dwayne Walker, pastor of Little Rock AME Zion Church in Charlotte will be the revivalist.
CHINA GROVE — Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is celebrating homecoming and its 32nd anniversary Sunday. The church was chartered Aug. 23, 1981, with 11 members and now has about 90 members.
The Rev. Fred Archer, pastor and founder, will lead the 11 a.m. service. A congregational meal follows the service at Bostian Heights Fire Department meeting room.
The congregation is affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod and is located just east of China Grove on Highway 152.
Henderson Grove Missionary Baptist Church will observe homecoming Sunday.
The 11 a.m. service will be conducted by the Rev. Perry Dye. Dinner will be served afterward. Guest speaker at the 3 p.m. service is the Rev. Darrick Clemmons, pastor of St. Joseph Missionary Baptist Church in Statesville.
A four-day revival will be held at 7:30 p.m Monday through Thursday. Guest evangelist will be the Rev. Dr. Herbert Miller II, pastor of First Baptist Church in Lexington.
Historic St. Andrew’s
WOODLEAF — The annual homecoming at Historic St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, will be held at 11:15 a.m. Sunday.
Lunch will follow at Unity Presbyterian Church.
The service will celebrate the 173rd anniversary of the consecration of St. Andrew’s in August 1840. The service will be conducted by the Rev. William O. Gregg, assistant bishop of NC.
The St. Andrew’s Historic Church Committee is interested in finding anyone whose ancestors may have been buried in the lower half of the cemetery, where African-Americans who had been enslaved or later worked on farms in the area are buried. The graves in this area of the cemetery are unmarked. As part of the annual service, Bishop Gregg will rededicate this area of the cemetery. KANNAPOLIS — Lakewood Baptist Church, 806 Kluttz St., is celebrating its 74th anniversary Sunday.
Bread of Life Quartet will be in concert. The Rev. Aaron Brooks will speak, followed by a meal in the fellowship building.
Lakewood Baptist, first known as White’s Memorial Baptist Church, was organized Aug. 13, 1939, with 13 charter members, an outgrowth of a Sunday School organized the year before with 24 members. The Rev. Wade James from North Kannapolis Baptist Church preached the first sermon.
New Zion Missionary
New Zion Baptist Church, 2785 Dunn’s Mountain Road, will observe its 120th church anniversary and homecoming at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Guest speaker will be the Rev. Roger Williamson, pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Mt. Ulla.
Revival services start at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday with guest speaker Bisphop Derek Kelly, pastor of New Faith Full Gospel Fellowship Center of Lexington. Area churches will render music each night.
Church of the Word of God
SPENCER — The Church of the Word of God, l1380 Hollywood Drive, celebrates the 17th pastoral anniversary of Pastor Willie James Heilig at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Pastor Heilig began as a minister in 1982. In 1996, he started The Church of the Word of God. The first service was in August 1997 with 3 adults and 10 kids at Dan Nichols Park.
CONCORD — Bethpage United Presbyterian Church, 8701 Mooresville Road, hosts a celebration of song, praising and preaching at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Gospelfest 2013, “Together: This Is How We Do It,” is a combination concert featuring the choirs of Bellefonte Presbyterian, Bethel Baptist, Bethpage United Presbyterian, C. N. Jenkins Presbyterian and First Presbyterian of Kannapolis.
The annual revival is Monday through Wednesday at 7 p.m. nightly, with Vincent S. Tillman, Sr., pastor of Life Giving Church of God ofConcord, as guest preacher.
