A Salisbury man who expected to walk away with a gun permit walked into a jail cell Wednesday evening. Rasheek Tyrell Parry, 28, of the 100 block of Tree Top Court, went to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office to obtain a purchase permit for a handgun. He failed to inform officials he was a convicted felon and therefore could not legally obtain a permit.
Parry applied for the permit Monday and was asked to pick it up by sheriff’s officials Wednesday. He applied under the name Rasheek Tyrell Sankey, but when officials verified the name and the picture, which Parry provided, they knew he wasn’t telling the truth.
“The form asks if you’ve ever been convicted of a felony,” said Sheriff’s Capt. John Sifford.
Parry has felony convictions and is listed as an absconder from the Department of Public Safety. In 2005, he was convicted of felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony breaking and entering, and burning buildings under construction. He served nearly five years in prison and was on probation. The then 19-year-old Parry was charged with burning a South Long Street rental home.
Officials used the photo and the other information Parry provided to determine he, in fact, had a felony conviction. “They ran the record and had so many similarities,” Sifford said.
When authorities called Parry in to pick up his permit, he was in the sheriff’s office lobby within 30 minutes. Perry initially denied he’d given them false information and had a felony conviction.
“It does show the system does work. We try to do as thorough a check as possible,” Sifford said.
Parry remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $50,000 charged with felony probation violation.
