SALISBURY — Dr. Donald Knox has been reinstated as principal of South Rowan High School, officials confirmed Thursday.

Rita Foil, spokeswoman for the Rowan-Salisbury School System, said Knox started as the system’s warehouse manager on July 1 and came back to South Rowan as its principal on Aug. 7.

The school board voted June 17 to transfer Knox, who has been principal of South Rowan since 2008, to the position of warehouse manager. School officials said he would retain his salary to comply with his contract.

School board and staff members said they could not comment on the reasons behind Knox’s transfer and reinstatement.

Knox also did not return calls for comment on the issue.

Amanda Eller, Knox’s stepdaughter, said his family is excited to see him going back to school and looking forward to the next year.

“I don’t know a lot about the process or what happened, but I’m glad he’s back at school, and I know the teachers and staff are too,” Eller said.

At the June 28 meeting of the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education, nearly 20 people showed up to support Knox and oppose the transfer, but most were not allowed to speak. Chairman Richard Miller said “active personnel issues” could not be specifically discussed during public comment.

Instead, several gave written remarks to the board and shared their concerns and objections with a Post reporter.

“Our main purpose was to get him back in his job — to get him back to where he should have been all along,” Eller said on Thursday. “In the end, the outcome he got was what we wanted.”
