Authorities say three teens used vehicles for target practice in and around the Autumn Glen subdivision, shooting at the cars as they passed by on the roadway. The juveniles, ages 13, 14 and 15, began shooting a BB gun at signs and then moved on to cars. A Rowan County Sheriff’s Office report said the boys shot at five cars, but damaged three. The incident occurred Wednesday shortly before 11 p.m. in the area of Old Beatty Ford Road and Organ Church Road.
A deputy was responding to the area after one of the motorists contacted law enforcement. While en route, the deputy was approached by another driver. After speaking with the victims, the deputy drove to the entrance of the subdivision. Two bicycles were left in the bushes at the subdivision entrance.
The officer searched but did not find anyone in the area. He returned to Cheeseman’s Store to speak with the victims about the damage when the mother of one of the juveniles approached the deputy. She told the officer she had two of the teens in her car. She said they returned to her house without their bicycles and told her the bikes were in the woods at Autumn Glen. The third juvenile ran home, she said.
The vehicle owner said if restitution was made and the teens were willing to work for the vehicle to be repaired, he would rather do that than have them go through the juvenile services process. The parents and the teens agreed to the arrangement.
