Rowan-Cabarrus Community College students returned from the 59th Annual North Carolina Phi Beta Lambda Leadership Conference with awards including first prize in accounting, business communications, economic analysis and decision making and marketing concepts.
“I am so proud of all of our students who competed at the conference,” said Martha Cranford, Rowan-Cabarrus faculty member and chapter adviser. “I’m proud of our students and would encourage all Rowan-Cabarrus students to consider being part of the PBL organization and compete in state and national competitive events.”
Competitions at the Annual Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) State Leadership Conference range from human resource management, accounting and economics, as well as team events in business ethics, desktop publishing and parliamentary procedure and a host of other similar business-related topics. The students also attended leadership seminars at the conference and received individual certificates in leadership development.
This was the fifth year in a row that RCCC students received high honors at the conference. First, second and some third place winners automatically qualify to compete in the 2013 PBL National Conference in Anaheim, Calif. Students will compete against others from across the United States, including four-year colleges and universities.
Here are the student winners with their competition placement and subjects.
First place — accounting principles, Jenifer Ritter; business communications, Kerri Phar; economic analysis and decision making, Kerri Phar; marketing concepts, Trish Douglas.
Second place — financial concepts, Alan Surratt.
Third place — impromptu speaking, Rebekah Nichols; marketing concepts, Rebekah Nichols; micro economics, Trish Douglas.
Fourth place — retail management, Susan P. Boucher; community service project, Dawn Barbee, Connie Goodman.
Fifth place — macroeconomics, Tony Adams; management concepts, Susan P. Boucher; word processing, Dawn Barbee.
North Carolina’s Phi Beta Lambda includes chapters from community colleges and four-year colleges and universities across the state. Students compete against each other through written examinations to test technical knowledge and oral presentations in the various competitions.
Jenifer Ritter is the student-president of the Rowan-Cabarrus chapter. More than 250 delegates, advisers and professional division members from 38 universities and colleges attended the annual conference. The RCCC chapter is among the largest in the state.
