Here’s a view Salisburians haven’t seen often over the past 100 years — the Confederate monument not on its granite pedestal in the median at West Innes and Church streets. In this Salisbury Post file photograph, taken 22 years ago on Dec. 9, 1990, the winged statue of Fame and the fallen Confederate soldier by her side are lying on their backs in a trailer before heading off to a foundry in Cincinnati, Ohio. After Eleftherios Karkadoulias and his company cleaned, repaired and restored the bronze statue there, it was transported back to Salisbury and bolted onto its base in time for a rededication ceremony six months later. The packing up and move to Ohio attracted about 25 onlookers. The monument has been at this spot since 1909.
