Unopposed, Everhart heads to sixth term as Spencer mayor

SPENCER — Spencer residents and town aldermen apparently think Jody Everhart is doing a pretty good job.

No one filed to challenge him at the ballot box, so the Spencer mayor is on his way to a sixth term, barring a successful write-in campaign.

Everhart said top priorities during his next term will be trying to lower the town’s property tax rate, supporting the town’s new 42-acre park nicknamed Spencer Woods and completing the first two years of the Small Town Main Street initiative.

He also pledged to support the downtown business district, as well as residential growth.

“Each of the past several years has been very hard for our citizens and employees with the economic times,” said Everhart, 54. “With a town board working together with the town staff and citizens, we are doing more to move the town forward.”

A signal maintainer for Norfolk Southern Railway, Everhart attended Lees-McRae College and Central Piedmont Community College. Before he won election as mayor, he served for six terms as an alderman.

Everhart serves with the Spencer Fire Department. While he’s running unopposed, there are eight candidates vying for six seats on the town board, including all of the incumbents.
