Jim Christy and Ronnie Mangum topped the First Flight with 74s.

Leading the Second Flight with 80s were Billy Morgan and Robert Jordan.

Tom Sadowski leads the Third Flight. He shot 85.

Mike Self, Bobby Rodgers, Rick Carty and Brit Staton shot 91s and pace the Fourth Flight.

Mike Frye shot 66 and leads the Senior Championship. Dean Harwood was second at 73.

The final round starts today at 8:30 a.m.

• Ben Childress, 9, won the 11U division of the Tarheel Youth Golf Tournament at St. James Plantation.

Childress qualified for the tournament of champions.

Michael Childress shot 2-under 70 to win the 12-13 age group by one shot for his third tournament win of the year. Childress eagled No. 18.


Prep cross country

Carson male runners need to contact coach Bob Marchinko at 704-855-7165 if they plan to compete in cross country this fall.

Athletes will need a current physical on a NCHSAA form before they can train with the team. Practice starts on Aug. 1 at 9 a.m.


Youth baseball

East Rowan’s 9U all-stars were eliminated from the Southeast Regional in Franklin, Tenn. by a 10-0 loss to West Raleigh.

East won three games in the event. East beat Grassland, Tenn., 4-2 for its third win and suffered its first loss by a 13-2 score to Clay County (Fla.).

Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 4-3 to Hickory on Saturday.

Hirotoshi Onaka hit a three-run homer for the Crawdads in the second inning, and the visitors were able to hang on at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.

Keon Barnum had two of Kannapolis’ seven hits.

• Asheville shortstop Rosell Herrera has raised his batting average to .366 in 98 games in the South Atlantic League with a recent spree, but it appears unlikely that he’ll be able to hit .400.

The last .400 hitter in a full-season minor league was Salisbury’s Aaron Pointer, who batted .402 in 1961.

College leagues

In the All-American Collegiate Baseball League playoffs on Friday: the Carolina Freedom won 10-2 against the Wilkes Warriors; the Mount Pleasant Militia beat the Davie Pioneers 4-3; the Mooresville All-Americans beat the Freedom 3-2, and the Rowan Patriots won 3-2 against Mount Pleasant.

American Legion

In the American Legion state tournament in Wilson, Jacksonville and Wilson were eliminated on Friday.

Kernersville edged Jacksonville 4-3 to stay alive in the double-elimination event, while Wilson lost 11-5 to Randolph County.

Garner beat Shelby 6-3 in 10 innings in a winners bracket game. The late winners bracket game matching defending champion Wilmington with newcomer Lincoln County was postponed due to rain.

The Wilmington-Lincoln County contest was rescheduled for this morning and will kick off another four-game day.

The early game will be followed by Randolph vs. Shelby, Kernersville vs. the Lincoln-Wilmington loser and Garner vs. the Lincoln-Wilmington winner.

Play continues through Tuesday.


North football camp

Cavalier Football Camp at North Rowan will be held July 29-31. You can register on the first day of camp.

The camp is for rising third-eighth graders and lasts from 9 a.m. until noon.

The cost is $40 for three days or $15 per day. Campers will receive a T-shirt. Water and drinks will be provided.

Fall Baseball

Spencer Little League will be holding registration at the 8th Street Ballpark in Spencer on Fridays, Aug. 2 and 9, from 4-7 p.m. and Saturdays, August 3 and 10, from 9 until noon.

Registration is $25 per child. Also registration can be made online at www.playspencerlittleleague.com.

China Grove

China Grove youth baseball and softball registrations will be taken at Dale’s Sporting Goods in China Grove until August 15.

Fees are $40 until August 15. Leagues offered are 5/6 Coach Pitch; 7/8 Coach Pitch; 9/10 baseball, and 11/12 baseball. Softball leagues are 5/6/7; 8/9/10 and 11/12/13.
