RALEIGH (AP) — A federal audit shows that a single North Carolina address was sent more than 2,400 refunds by the Internal Revenue Service in the 2011 tax year.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that refunds sent to that undisclosed Raleigh location totaled more than $7 million.
The example of the federal tax agency’s poor performance in rooting out fraud was the third-highest amount on a nationwide list of recipients that year. One address in Atlanta was the destination for more than 20,000 refunds worth $46 million.
IRS spokesman Dan Boone declined to comment this week. The agency responded to the report last year that changes are needed for overseeing Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers. The numbers are generally given to immigrants working legally or illegally instead of Social Security numbers.
