A Linwood woman was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon following a four-vehicle crash at East Innes Street and the Interstate 85 on-ramp. Salisbury Police say speed was a factor in the chain-reaction crash. One driver was charged in the incident that occurred just before 4:30 p.m. in front of the Shell convenience store.
Hunter McClintock, 19, of Salisbury, was traveling faster than the posted 35 mph speed limit when he struck the vehicle in front of him, said officer M.E. Morgan. McClintock was driving a 2001 Honda Accord that had severe damage to the front. He was not injured. He was charged with failure to reduce speed.
Wayne Henderson, 51, of Kernersville, was traveling in front of McClintock in a 2005 Dodge Durango. Henderson’s vehicle had some damage to its rear bumper, but was able to be driven from the scene. He struck a 2005 Nissan Maxima in front of him, but was not injured.
Deloris Cruse, 68, of Linwood, was in the vehicle Henderson struck from behind. She was taken by ambulance to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center with minor injuries. Cruse struck a 2005 Toyota Camry driven by Brenda Raney, 61, of Salisbury. Raney was not injured and was able to drive her vehicle from the scene.
Traffic had to be ushered into the far left lanes as officers investigated the crash and the vehicles could be towed. After about an hour the roadway was cleared and traffic was able to move freely.
Officer Morgan said it is not clear how fast McClintock was driving since there were no skids, but could confirm he was going over the posted speed limit. Henderson told a Post reporter he and the other vehicles in front of him were stopped and that the driver of the Honda did not stop. In addition to Salisbury Police, who directed traffic and investigated, the Salisbury Fire Department, Rowan EMS and members of the IMAP traffic control unit also assisted.
