COROLLA (AP) — The N.C. Highway Patrol says a Pennsylvania couple vacationing on the Outer Banks is dead after they were hit while walking on a path adjacent to N.C. 12.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reports Wesley and Elizabeth Martin of Lancaster, Pa., were killed late Monday morning.
Trooper Jeff Wilson said Troy Bowman, 50, of Ashburn, Va., is charged with reckless driving and two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Wilson said Bowman told investigators he fell asleep behind the wheel and hit the couple.
Wilson said Bowman didn’t try to flee and that there were no signs of drug or alcohol use.
The trooper said the Martins’ four children, ranging in age from 11 to 18, were on the beach with family members when the accident occurred.
