SALISBURY — A China Grove man was placed under $1 million bond Sunday, following a single-vehicle accident that left his 14-year-old passenger dead.

Francisco Romero Huerta, 34, of Railroad Avenue in China Grove is charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and driving without a license, among other charges.

According to arrest records, Huerta was driving while intoxicated at 8:47 a.m. Sunday on Goodnight Road.

While exceeding safe speeds, his vehicle went left of the center line, then veered off the road and hit a tree.

A breath test confirmed the presence of alcohol, and blood was drawn for a further test, according to arrest records.

Huerta’s blood alcohol level was not stated.

The arrest warrant for the charge of felony death by vehicle identifies the deceased as Eric Soto.

Media reports Sunday afternoon gave his age as 14, and identified him as the passenger in Huerta’s vehicle.

The Rowan County Magistrate’s Office confirmed that information Sunday night.

Huerta was being held under $1 million bond Sunday.

His first appearance in District Court is set for Tuesday.
