Author Alisha Byrd returns with a new book, “Gemstones.” It examines the lives of eight aptly named young girls — Ruby, Sapphire, Opal, Amber, Emerald, Pearl, Topaz and Diamond. Each girl faces trials and tribulations but finds a way to persevere despite her circumstances. Byrd tells the stories of how these gemstones have been cut and shaped by disrespect, sexuality, opposition, abandonment, envy, promiscuity, disabilities, trials and tribulations. Even though their stories and struggles are different, their mission is the same: to embrace, become and love who they are.
According to a press release, the overriding theme in “Gemstones” can be found in the New Living Translation version of 1 Peter 3: 3-4 which says, “Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” “Gemstones” is fewer than 100 pages, easy to read and geared toward girls 13 and up, Byrd says. Byrd, a native of Salisbury, is the daughter of Patricia Byrd-Sturdivant and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Byrd Sr. Alisha Byrd is the mother of Chastity Byrd and a Yorkie-Poo dog, Tarheel. She received a dual bachelor’s degree in political science and history from Winston-Salem State University and a master of business administration from Strayer University. Alisha Byrd is the founder of Elect Ladies and Gentlemen, a non-profit organization that “edifies, educates and empowers young women and men.”
