SALISBURY — Authorities seized marijuana and cocaine after a foot chase through Salisbury on Thursday.
During a traffic stop on Interstate 85 near East Innes Street, a passenger jumped from the vehicle and was chased by Rowan County Sheriff’s deputies.
Members of the department’s Aggressive Criminal Enforcement team found the suspect, later identified as Claude McClinton, hiding in brush behind Lowe’s Hardware Store off Faith Road.
Deputies initially stopped the vehicle after officers said it was following another vehicle too closely. The driver, 30-year-old Peter Jackson of Charlotte, did not run, but was taken into custody on charges of driving while license revoked and following too close.
Deputies said McClinton, also 30, was found with 15 grams, or .53 ounces, of marijuana and 10 grams, .35 ounces, of crack cocaine. The cocaine was valued at $2,000.
McClinton, also of Charlotte, was charged with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a public officer. He was placed under a $50,000 bond. According to deputies, McClinton was not eligible to be bonded out after refusing to be fingerprinted or photographed.
A first court appearance is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m.
